Experience content While monochromatic prints made from ink usually come to mind when "gyotaku" is mentioned, you can experience making colored gyotaku here that have some colors applied.
There are two ways to make gyotaku: the "direct method" where ink is applied directly to the fish, and the "indirect method" where Japanese washi paper is laid on the fish and tapped to capture its shape. For colored gyotaku, the "joint method" is used.
We will apply a safe paint known as "rinsai" that is free from toxins to a silk fabric base filled with cotton to obtain the gyotaku print of the fish.
This method allows us to capture detailed patterns that can only be observed if you look at the print closely, which makes the finished gyotaku feel like a work of art rather than a print of the fish for recording purposes.
Finally, the eyes are drawn in and the gyotaku is affixed to a colored paper. With their colors and fidelity to minute details, colored gyotaku can be displayed as they are and enjoyed as works of art.
It is also a delight to be able to take the fish that you have used to make gyotaku and cook it directly.
We will prepare rural dishes together by mainly using vegetables that have been harvested from the vegetable garden in the house and fish caught locally in Hamada.
