The city of Gotsu faces the Sea of Japan in western Shimane Prefecture. Tsuyu no Yado lies in a quiet space among the mountains, on land blessed by the abundant nature of the sea, mountains, and rivers. The atmosphere of this century-old house, built in 1915, has been renovated to create a cozy space while maintaining the structure's personality. This old private house experience offers a rich rural lifestyle with a sense of the seasons characterizing Matsukawa, with activities such as farming, soba noodle-making, traditional performing arts experiences, and more.
In particular, living in an old folk house is a rare and precious experience. The irori hearth, which can be used for grilling at mealtime, excites both children and adults with a lifestyle outside of everyday experience.

Here you can experience soba noodle-making, a fun event performed together with proprietors.

Matsukawa is a town that treasures living in harmony with nature and interactions among people. Why not stay at Tsuyu no Yado as a first step in considering a countryside life full of smiles?
Look for the large mural of the cartoon character Totoro painted on the retaining wall.

Experience content Every year when the rice planting season rolls around, the sound of traditional hayashi music comes out of somewhere.
Hanataue is a rice-planting ritual in which saotome (rice-planting maidens) perform planting in time with planting songs by accompanists, to pray for good health and a good harvest. Here you can participate in the hanataue rice planting rite as a rice-planting maiden, called saotome.

It is worth visiting just to see the hayashi musical accompanists and saotome dressed in bright garb walking toward the rice fields for planting, following a procession led by cows and horses decorated with ornaments. This scene, evoking the mood of days long gone, overlaps with the voices of the musicians resounding in this quiet area of rice fields, and is sure to awaken something forgotten in the hearts of Japanese.

Saotome costumes can be rented. The role of saotome is originally one for women, but children and men can also participate. Please inquire about costumes.

Experience content In the ancient hanataue rice planting rite to pray for good health and a good harvest, musical accompaniment called hayashi provides an essential lead.
The musicians regularly practice hayashi to preserve and pass down traditions that have been inherited since ancient times.

You can enjoy a hayashi experience, playing the drum or flute under guidance.
People long ago listened to this music from childhood in a variety of scenarios, learning the songs naturally. The music that appears at local festivals, including hanataue, has a unique melody and tone. There is no musical score, so performers rely on their ears.

Hayashi is a performing art handed down from long ago. Playing drums and flutes will give you a glimpse of the simple sentiments of the ancient Japanese, who offered prayers of thanks to the gods and nature.
