NAO Farm is located in a peaceful rural setting in western Shimane prefecture just off Route 9 in Gotsu City. The name "NAO" means "Natural & Organic." As its name implies, the farm is surrounded by many plants and flowers. The building has also been designed to blend into its natural surroundings. The entrance of the building is marked by a handmade signboard that reads "Kobo No-no-HaNa" in Japanese. Here, you will be warmly welcomed by the Fukumachi couple who embodies the gentle spirit of the surroundings.
The farm has a concept of learning from the natural world, blending into and coexisting with the natural environment, and exploring ways in which the activities and lifestyles of mankind can be part of a sustainable cycle.
Based on this concept, the fields here are free from all pesticides or chemical fertilizers; instead, they are managed in a way that allows them to coexist with insects, microorganisms, and weeds. The fertilizers are made in-house using fallen leaves, fish scraps, grass that has been cut, rice bran, and other materials that are easily obtainable from the surroundings. By preparing the fields in a manner that allows for the recycling of local resources, the farm practices the rotation and mixed cultivation of a small volume of a wide variety of crops.
Events such as communal meals, cooking activities, handicraft work and games that harness natural materials, and concerts are held irregularly. The farm also sells vegetables and processed food items. Please get in touch for more information.
